👨‍🍳 Howdy... name is Shawn. I'm an artist, but my preferred nomenclature is donut chef. There are plenty of artists, far more talented artists than little old moi. Van Gogh, I am not. But I do like to have phun & I'm decent enough at what I do. I make damn tasty donuts for the soul. It is my vision that birthed Lump's Heady Donuts. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for checking out my donut shoppe! Truly. Even if you're only here to tell me how much I suck.

💕 I have 2 loves in my life. Music [Phish/Jam Bands] & making donuts. Like so many, my life was indeed saved by rock & roll! 🎶One way or another, so many of us have been! I don't think it's cliche, I think It's a testament, rather! Especially with this 💩 show 🌎 on🔥routine, that's getting a bit old. It's pulling down our vibe, man. Humanity needs music, the arts & culture now, more than ever! It's likely the only way we don't lose our collective 💩!

So thank you again, for🙏 taking a moment from your day & checking out the Donut Shoppe. Honored really. These donuts are my humble creation & this concept was years in the making. And our site is an expanding universe of all things donuts. ⭕ In fact, we are strictly dedicated to the donut. You will find, that unlike DD... our donut menu ONLY includes donuts! No breakfast sandwiches. No bran muffins. However, we do proudly offer coffee.

1st thing you may notice about me, I'm a redhead🔥😇, like Trey. Yes, I have the gingervitus. 😔 One thing I've always loved about 😍 Trey & the Lizards🦎plotline was, the kicker... "practically extinct." We are practically extinct. 🤣 Like for realz.

Even Troy Pistachio? Practically extinct!

Experts "expert" that we're 1-2% of the world's population; however, recent studies from the UK revealed that ginger expression, is more likely about 0.5-1%, possibly less. The math? Turns out, you need another 2-3 "sub-mutations" to additionally occur--besides needing the 2 required mutated copies of the MC1R gene, as previously understood. So, while we're not going extinct per se... we "gingers" are "practically extinct," or at the least, part of the super-duper-rare-adventure's-club. Sunblock is definitely our phriend & honestly, Trey was probably picked-on some, as a kid. Add being an Ernesto taboot? More than likely. Lord knows I was picked on a bit! Haha. So whatever you do, take care of your shoes... and for addendum sake (2) things: don't read what the ancient Greeks said about redheads. 😮🤣 Pay no mind to it... but do teach your kids not to bully gingers, nor anyone else for that matter. We're all in this together. And in the ginger's case, we're fractionally represented.

I got into the band tail-end of '98, having listened to them at a party, around the holidays with my HS friends & falling in 😻 love. My first baptisms into the scene were some smaller local shows/festivals, that following spring & then '99 Phish summer tour for several shows. That year, I sold a few of you artwork already, under my friend's moniker, "Nothing Matters Artworks." If you have a small 5"x7" marbleized liquid-acrylic canvas purchased that summer or the next, there's likely a 1/3 chance I could have made it, as there were 3 of us, on that epic journey, another lifetime ago. Our summer (in a tent) & my 1st Phish show, officially clocking in for duty on July 1, 1999, in Antioch TN. And it has been a love affair since. ❤️

Also, growing up gingie, 🔥 I never had many positive redheaded roll models. In my era, Hollywood & popular culture would often portray redhead males like: Alfred E. Neuman, Ron Weasley, Ronald McDonald, Richie Cunningham, Napoleon Dynamite, Chuckie Finster... or worse, the Chuckie Doll. Google Clowns. Scroll through the 1st 100 images you see. You'll get the point, quickly.

Trey's music touched my soul incredibly deep, like so many countless others. But being cursed/blessed, with red hair growing up, his presence alone, his transcendent spirit & his success defied (shredded) what modern society often crudely tight-casted us "ginger mutants," as. With the most modern extremes, as some know, being "the milkman's kid," "soulless," or even "alien hybrids." 🤪 Where do they come up w/this 💩? Actually, that one may be true. 👽

*Side note: a.) I can confirm with 100% certainty--we do indeed earn a freckle for every soul we steal. b.) Generally speaking, the carpet indeed matches the proverbial drapes. I hope this clears up any misconceptions.

But Trey was my first real role model whom I could [positively] identify with! We have matching carpets & drapes, after all, damn it! 😂 Kidding aside, I just had to wait until young adulthood for said role model. At least until I would discover him & the band from Vermont. And to realize along the way, Trey was kind of evolving into the "Mozart" of our day, as John Popper, would eventually call him--it was just so incredibly awesome to have Trey as a role model, but particularly as younger redhead. Truthfully, all the band members are amazing artists & they're in such incredible & unprecedented sync w/each other, as gifted musicians. Come on... they transcend (shred) the normal boundaries of music & turn it into the boundless, in grand harmonic structures of immense sound & light. They go places humans haven't dared w/instruments & they take us all with them for a few magical hours.

I was absolutely🪝hooked, first time I heard their music. Then sold up the river, realizing Trey was also a redhead. And for close to 30 years now, they've gotten me out of some pretty tough spots emotionally & helped me celebrate everything worth celebrating. Always. They reminded me to preserve & value what is important & to understand who my friends really are. They kept a candle lit in the window--they've given me so much hope, where I'd otherwise be struggling to produce it myself. Depression is a bitch! But I would absolutely need the safe haven & refuge their music provided me. Which is honestly, priceless! Whatever it was, or is, it has always been pure JOY to experience & grow with this particular band's influence. I wouldn't have it any other way.

It's also amazing to witness their story unfold & evolve, throughout both the years & decades. After all, looking at the whole picture, the math is quite extraordinary, if not complex. Beautiful, really. And of course, they remind us continually that we're all in this together. We're all small parts, in one giant, beautiful mosaic, formed around the band; the 4 dudes we love so dearly. Despite all of our combined shortcomings, the entire circus, all the people, the rich culture, the sense of community & yes, even accounting for the underbelly/heartbreak of our culture--it is absolutely one of the most amazing things currently occurring on this otherwise, very rotten blue spinning ball. Again, they give me hope! A wave of it, often when I need it most, from out of the chaos. And they never disappoint. At various points, everything in this world has failed me... except for this band. Lumpy Donuts are my way of hopefully giving back to the community I call home, providing myself a much needed constructive outlet, & purpose--in addition to better assisting my disabled parents. Getting old is fun.

But enough about me...

My story is probably very similar to a lot of others, inspired by the best band ever! And you're not here to listen to me blabber on & on about myself... or wax about what it's like, being a near-extinct, fire-crotched, mutant alien-hybrid. Let's talk about what makes a donut "lumpy." I mean... you're here for the donuts. ⭕

"Nutritional Values"

Generally, I've had very positive feedback for our donuts & additionally, our product quality. However, I've also had some previous inquiries into weather I use AI to generate my current works. The short answer is an impassioned "no."

And I'd be more than happy to walk anyone through my creative process.
Honestly, any of you stinky-ass wooks could surely make better donuts than myself, before AI ever could! Again, not Van Gogh here, the bar is low enough.😉
Walk with me... I'll show you what I do.

*1st thing you should know... I look at the donut how I view the GD stealie. A potential "universal" blank canvas--for our community's artists to do "their thangs." This, in addition to the Fishman donut print obviously being what we all love so dearly today--a cultural binding & a visual reminder of the beloved greater community. A subtle, constant reminder about the undertones... the culture, values & philosophy behind the greater movement. And of course we have Fishman to thank for the donut, in addition to funky-ass beats... nearly every single day! But for the community's shared symbolic icon ⭕, it would likely mean nothing at all to any of us, without that sexy little muumuu. 👗😻

Half of my donut endeavor is making countless unique multi-dimensional & conceptual designer donuts, w/their unique defining features. And the other half is adding graphics to some of these designer donuts, that help convey what I strive to condone. And that's to create an imagery, a feeling--in even using the donut like a stealie, instead of a pattern. I'm essentially channeling musical iconography, through the donut. To me... there is no "universe" where the donut shouldn't be akin to the stealie, more fundamentally. At least as an option. It's written into our community's cultural fabric & DNA already, if you think about it. ⭕💀

Artistic Process / Designer Donuts

In making donuts the "lumpy way," first things that I consider are:

lighting / shadowing
illumination / color density
features / specific details
textural options / layering
trims / accents
eventually, the most critical part--the donut hole itself. If the hole is not real, was the donut ever really there?

*A Donut without a hole, is a donut without a true north. Otherwise, it's a multi-dimensional object, being portrayed within 1-dimensional restrictions. We know, the donut to be the literal universe's shape from modern academia... let's give them some form.

*At Lump's, our donuts have standalone character & depth. Even if additional graphics/imagery are never added, our donuts stick-out, all by themselves. MEATY donuts with definition... some hips to them! They burst w/energy themselves. These are the Lump's kind of donuts!

Illumination, Shading & Finishing

This is our standard & modernized plain "Vivid Donut" type. It's our most popular base donut design. The previous red donut illustrated above, we call the "Plump Donut." It's got some sweet hips as we mentioned. It's a sexy & voluptuous donut, decadent in its mere suggestive alure. It looks MEATY, because it is. And it's achieved by paying attention to details like shadowing, along w/manipulations of the color density, throughout the donut. While the blue/orange Vivid Donut, depicted here, is a more flattened 3D/depth effect, rather than a bulging 3D effect, like the Plump offers. The emphasis on the Vivid Donut instead, is placed on the smoothness of the donut's texture, through color density & illumination, creating a silk-like finish.

With our donut's additional rigid circular lines & trim, a strikingly defined donut emerges. Our designer donuts leave visual impression, because they are fundamentally, donuts w/definitive visual form.

Textural Effects

Meet the "Rustic Donut". First, it was the pioneer donut, with our mastery over the "hole." No puns intended. 😇 And this was no trivial achievement for the Lump. Rather, a true 2001 / 'Also sprach Zarathustra' 🚀😁 moment, when it occurred. A crowning achievement in our own "donut evolution." As there are no features more important than the donut's hole & the donut's overall dimensionality.

Importantly, the Rustic Donut's textualization, is one of its most definitive features & it gives off a visual vibrational/bowl effect. The gradient, combined with hints of weathered imperfections, along with lighting/color density adjustments, often yield trippy/aged effects to the donut's appearance. Rustic Donuts also have a very pronounced trim [more on trim later], which causes the donut to further stick-out to the observer.

Even being an older donut, the Rustic series remains a steady chef's choice. 👨‍🍳😋

Once you get good at designing donuts...

Like anything, you stay with it long enough, you continue growing. A metamorphosis occurs & you naturally get better & better, until it becomes your craft. And then you get brave, take more calculated risks artistically, you get more creative & you evolve.

Blimpy Paradox Donut

Blimpy Paradox Donuts are a concept where I left the "scaffolding" more visible. This provides for a very raw effect, seeing theses ridges... the backbone essentially exposed. In these donuts, I've also pushed the boundaries with color, temperature, tint, tones, shadowing/lighting effects, in addition to vibrancy & saturation. This creates visual distortion, while this particular donut maintains the plump/juicy effect, covered above [see: Plump Donut w/"the wide hips"]. This donut has a very raw final effect, due to the scaffolding being exposed & mixture of lighting/shadowing used. The donut provides wonderful dimensionality & is a favorite, on the menu. Most donuts per square inch of any of our donuts too!

Rustic Paradox Donut

This is the chef's choice👨‍🍳😋 for Paradox Donuts... so far. This donut features the gradient feel that the Rustic Donut most prominently feature. I tweaked the opacity of the main donut color in these, (blue in this case), to give a very back-lit feel. That and some shadowing effect gives the feeling that the color is emerging towards you, illuminating the smaller red donuts. It features some of my interior design components as well, such as the inner ring structure. With it exposed, the overall effect has an industrialized feel, in addition to both retro/contemporary elements; additionally having a very pronounced trim, matching the smaller interior donut coloring. I have fun creating paradox donuts and experimenting considerably with lots of the lighting combos we get for visuals, as we witness the greatest lighting rig & crew in music history, do their thing too.

Caviar Paradox Donut

This is our newest paradox donut, currently. In a word, it's refined. The trim while present, is not as prominent, compared to our other donut offerings. But the 3D effect and those beautiful hips are ever present! Also, we designed these with the circle around the smaller donuts to "pop" more. These donuts are clean, sophisticated & modernized. It is designed with a smoother finish, life the Vivid Donuts, as well. We are in love with this donut & will be introducing at shortly, in an assortment of colors, along with featuring it prominently in our more Stealie-concept inspired donuts. This one is super yummy! As long as you're not grossed out by fish eggs. 🐟🥚

Widemouthed Paradox Donut

That's what she said. Kidding. In creating donuts that often portray imagery and/or convey thoughts & emotions, like undertones, it became apparent that a wider donut hole, offered a better spatial alternative to freely design, without spreading onto the donut itself, with the additional artistic scenes or elemental components being added. While being a Paradox Donut, it retains the proportions more evident in our scene's current 1-dimensional standard donut. It features a more bold trim as well.

Electric Paradox Donut

This another chef's choice donut. 👨‍🍳😋 While having a 3D effect, they're also a flat-surfaced donut, like our Vivid Donut series. However, the sculpting lines that define this donuts shape & add to the dimensionality, have been additionally tweaked to maximum exposure, creating an electrical & energized feel to the this super-sweet donut series. These donuts are a great example of how I capture the color combos that the lighting rigs offer. These have a very slight gradient effect to the surface & the smaller textural donuts are left exposed around the edging, to replace a standard trims. Lastly, I added an interior glow to the donuts, a few shades darker than the smaller textural donuts, featured in the paradox donut. The end result is a powerful donut... beaming with energy. I'm drooling just describing this one.

Grid Paradox Donut

Our original Paradox concept donut. My, we've come a long way since. These donuts feature a prominent/exaggerated shadowing effect around the exterior donuts outer-shell & inner cavity of the multi-dimensional donut. The texture consists of a stretched fabric-like appearance and has a subtle grid inlay, almost invisible to the naked eye. If you think you're imagining occasional streaking lines moving, when staring at this donut, the desired effect worked. I wanted to give the sensation that the smaller textural donuts where bound by a fabric grid... err, I should say, an "invisible net." This was another proud step in our donut evolution, at Lump's.

As long as you preserve the donut's most critical elements, it's typical confines disappear into the fog that surrounds.

And what a donut can be, becomes an open possibility...

A donut can be "cubed,"

or a donut can be a simple "plain," easy to make, yet irresistibly charming cartoon character, my phriend. And of course, literally anything in between.

Bringing us to the next step, in my process.

Making a donut's "soul" sing like a stealie or a Languedoc... you need imagery to bridge the musical iconography into your donut. Bridging the gap between form & function, while unlocking the infinite potential "phun" within each donut... er, I mean universe.
And if you can produce optical illusion using accumulated years of tedious & tenuous photoshoping skills. Go make some donuts too! You got the gift, wook. ⭕⭕⭕⭕⭕ You can make turtles look like they're passing through donuts. It's not rocket science & it's certainly not AI, nor witchcraft. 🧙‍♂️

Me again...

Concerning secondary art added to lumpy donuts, in my attempts at equating desired iconographical music connections, I will use a combination of graphics that I've made, along with premium stock art. I generally tweak the stock art well beyond the point of FUBAR. Lol.
I believe our lumpy donuts also have merit, based on their originality & whimsical approach, if I may be so bold. In lumpy donuts, you will not see much in the way of traditional branding parodies. Hey, if that's your thing, more power to you. It's tried & true artistic take... worked for decades. I wanted to personally take a different road with my iconography.
In the interests of full disclosure, due to a medical condition, a severe inherited & progressive body-tremor, in it's advanced stages, I implement stock art elements often, into my iconography creation. I want lumpy donuts to be simple, light & warm hearted... whimsical. But pretty basic, nonetheless. The donuts can be fun to your kid, or your buddy, on the "bike" ride. Lord knows many of us are professional "bicyclists," in every Hofmann sense of the word.
But in people with similar genetical profiles to mine, some of my health issues can be early indicators of a future onset of Parkinson's. The "P" word additionally runs in my family & you can hopefully now, sympathize w/my restraints a bit, not to mention my concerns about quality of life, as I age. Regretfully, in my hands, I'm less of an artist now, then when I was younger. Most certainly in my hands, I am not the artist I was 25 years ago. Not even the artist I was 5 years ago. This is why I'm a digital artist, ultimately. Creating w/a mouse is paramount to me... it's forgiving of a body tremor. If I involuntarily jerk a bit... I still have the opportunity to get it right, until I lift my finger from the mouse. My situation is not getting any better. Progressive things don't work that way. Worse yet, ginger-folk like Trey & I are in the highest risk group for Parkinson's. According to Harvard, redheads are actaully a staggering 50% more likely to get Parkinson's than any other demographic: (Michael J. Fox Foundation - info on genetic link) You better absolutely hope people like me, take one for the team, statistically! 🤣 In all seriousness, if that's my fate... I hope I do take one for team ginge! Gladly. I'd step into that "yesterday" for Trey, any damn day of the week. Frustratingly, I'd know more about my situation, if I could afford healthcare. My most recent full-time employer wasn't gracious enough to offer health insurance. To his employees, at least. Funny how that is. Life is tough, on many people though.
However, if you enjoy my donuts... well maybe I can change my course a little bit, here. Because I need hip replacement too. FML. 🤣
My progressive body tremor is why I set the expectation that I am not Van Gogh. I'm a digital donut chef, because digital art's very existence allows me to be a decent artist still, despite my challenges. Otherwise, my art would be trapped inside me. I will never have steady hands & it's only going to get worse, year over year. I haven't much choice with my preferred medium. It's more or less, my only capable option to capture what resides within my mind's eye.

I understand there's a lot of low quality & worse, AI produced art on the scene. Stuff that is 100% AI produced in 5 seconds has no biz anywhere. Instead, it's sadly everywhere, let alone our scene. And it is mind-numbing. Importantly though, there are grave environmental & philosophical blackholes, created by AI's growth. While I was curious at first, AI has worn extremely thin on me. It's definitely bad ju-ju, especially where the arts are concerned, not to mention: individual freedoms/liberties, privacy rights, the environment or generally, all things having to do w/John Connor. 🖥️👿

Occasionally, I'll use avail. premium stock art, as base elements for the donut's iconographic "inserts/impressions," through my professional account accesses. I'll tweak & photoshop the stock art/graphics for my desired effects, or optical illusions. Example: the Clueless Wallob Donut, pictured above & the turtle passing through the donut's hole. It's photoshopped to achieve the illusion of the pass through. Plain & simple. Also, I keep my donuts simple, in general, to an extent. My particular donut styles, resonate best visually, if there's not too much going on additionally, TBH. I put a lot of emphasis additionally on the structural artistic elements of the donut, itself. Just my style...
I also use background removal... which was around well before the onslaught of AI, both for novice & advanced creators, within industry software. So I will never apologize for using background removal in my process, which is essential anyway.

However, on a philosophical front, it would seem that being a digital artist, we're stuck on the front lines a bit, of a social war, many of us don't particularly want to be in. In a word, squeezed. And the ground is literally moving & shaking beneath us. We get friendly fire occasionally from visual artists practicing in other mediums. While every industry provider, from Adobe to Canva Professional & everything between, are promoting AI & putting it in your face, ad nauseam.

From my perspective, it would sadly appear that if you're an original digital/graphic design artist or include graphic/digital elements, into your mixed-media projects, you are guilty immediately by association, in the eyes of some, due to relative proximity to a computer, I suppose. As an artist, you need a tough skin & you need to shoulder criticism well. That's the vulnerability in creating something for public spectacle. The public has the potential to be downright cruel / crude to the artist. But that's the nature of art & even human nature, itself. But I do even realize that anyone who makes unfair critiques, are in the greater sense, fighting a greater good fight. I agree with them on a lot of fronts.

Just to recap: the digital arts industry's titans are trying to ram the crap down the digital artist's throats... and then the digital artists get the stank eye from some fellow non-digital artists, not even patient or articulate enough to think things through, on individual levels, before hurling baseless assumptions and/or insults, at someone they don't know, who's situation/life they could care less about & then tell someone else that they come from a place of light/love, 5 minutes later. I can tell you this: it is maddening to spend 1-3 days sometimes obsessing on a donut project, you had already spent an hour or more on. And just for someone to call it AI generated, without your artwork meeting any visual indicators [these indicators exist out there amidst the slop] & your eye doesn't even need to be trained to spot them, well then... aren't they being just as lazy in hurling baseless insults, as the equally lazy AI-slop content generator? I understand the good fight, but come on. Have you already sacrificed the digital artist at the alter of AI? I agree with the good fight you're doing--to an extent. But respectfully, if I don't cross certain lines, I expect others to not cross similar lines. After all, we're all literally spinning in circles, walking straight lines, following something that is gonna "corona" us anyway.

What I do, artistically is not rocket science, but it can be quite tedious & laborious. From start to finish, I'll often have sometimes as many as 15-20+ various layers of effects & and/or elements, text, lighting/shadowing, etc., all occupying a very close proximity, within the donut's circumference. Many with tweaked opacities & color settings to achieve the desired effects & blending. If upon examination, something is visually off, unaligned, or an area of coloring/shading is off, it can be quite time-consuming to get the donut back on the train again. A 30 minute donut, can spiral into days of tinkering. I'd need to go back, layer by layer, making adjustments and readjustments, to a multitude of settings & positions, sometimes. And have you ever tried to photoshop on the microscopic zoomed-in level? As much as your software even permits? If you're attempting to be near 'perfect', w/placement & alignment, along w/tiny details/consistencies can be absolute challenges in the process. But dear god, it's fun, nonetheless. Typically, spend about 2-3 hours on a donut, if you had to average it out. I revisit a donut a few times, just to see if I want to do something else with it. So it's a process, really & I'm not done, until I feel that I am.

Listen, at the end of the day, I just want to be the best Donut Chef I can be. Every part of my process was available before AI, to digital/graphic artists. If you want to call my art "slop," based on the fact I implore mixed usage of stock art, for added effects? Feel absolutely free! I make the donuts for my own emotional therapy, along w/my artistic expression. My hope is that others like them. And If others like the donuts & they see value in what I do? Great. If some folks don't, that's great too. That is their prerogative, ultimately. Nonetheless, maddening I tell you, is when someone discounts hours of your work, for something it inherently is not, a mindless 2-second production. It's self-aggrandizing for the accusing party, when directed at someone else. Likely, in an effort to build-up their own ego, but I politely regress. I'm not here to offend, however I am her to stand my ground. 😁

I do fear though the ground moving, underneath me, though. Again, all digital artists! For instance, if the required background remover is transitioned by providers to their AI suite, then I guess I'm screwed. So my pathway, I feel is razor thin.

We've reached the final hurrah of this intimate look, into the Lump's kitchen.

Lastly, I promised to cover a key component of our donuts earlier. I left it as a footnote on purpose. Hey... I'm a lefty. Left is where I always turn. This component is small & overlooked, yet a critically important detail, when crafting thoughtful designer donuts for people to wear. Our donuts, down to their "nuts & bolts," almost all include pronounced trim, of various lengths. This increases the amount of outfits you can throw together, or what shirts color a donut matches up w/. Whether the trim is bling-wide, or a clean razor's edge, "trim" is a defining part of 85% of our donut menu. Trim is on our donuts, because of what it brings to your table... your wardrobe when you're getting dressed. Lumpy donuts are fun, like that! ⭕😮
