Thanks for visiting.
👨🍳 Howdy... name is Shawn. I'm an artist, but honestly, my preferred nomenclature is donut chef. There are plenty of artists, far more talented than little old moi. Van Gogh, I am not. But I do like to have phun & I'm decent enough at what I do. What I do, is make donuts. It was my vision that birthed Lump's Heady Donuts. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for checking out my donut shoppe! Truly. Even if you're only here to tell me how much I suck.
💕 I have 2 loves in my life. Music [Phish/Jam Bands] & making donuts. And my life was indeed one of many, saved by rock & roll! 🎶One way or another, so many of us have been! I don't think it's cliche, I think It's a testament, rather. Especially with this 💩 show 🌎 on🔥routine, that's getting a bit old. It's pulling down our vibe, man. Humanity needs music, arts & culture now, more than ever before!
But again, thank you 🙏 for taking a moment from your day & checking out the Donut Shoppe. Honored really. These donuts are my humble creation. And this site is a budding universe of all things donuts. ⭕
1st thing you may notice about me, I'm a redhead🔥😇, like Trey. Yes, I have the ginervitus. 😔 One thing I've always loved about 😍 Trey & the Lizards🦎plotline was, the kicker... "practically extinct." We are practically extinct. 🤣 Like for realz.
Even Troy Pistachio? Practically extinct! Experts "expert" that we're 1-2% of the world's population; however, recent studies from the UK revealed that ginger expression, is more likely about 0.5-1%, possibly even less. The math? Turns out, you need another 2-3 "sub-mutations" to additionally occur--besides having 2 mutated copies of the MC1R gene, as previously thought. So, while we're not going extinct per se... we "gingers" are "practically extinct," or at the least, part of a super-duper-rare-adventure's-club, depending on your belief system. Sunblock is definitely our phriend & honestly, Trey was probably picked-on a bit, as a kid. Lord knows I was! Lol. So whatever you do, take care of your shoes... and an addendum: don't read what the ancient Greeks said about redheads. 😮🤣 Pay no mind... but do teach your kids not to bully gingers.
I got into the band tail-end of '98, having listened to them at a party, around the holidays. And my first "shows" were some local festivals the following spring & then summer tour. Our summer (in a tent) & my 1st Phish show, officially clocked in on July 1, 1999, Antioch TN. Growing up gingie, 🔥 I never had many positive redheaded roll models. Hollywood would portray us like Alfred E. Neuman, Ron Weasley, Ronald McDonald, Richie Cunningham, Napoleon Dynamite, Chuckie Finster... or worse, the Chuckie Doll. Google Clowns. Scroll through the 1st 100 images you see. You'll get the point, quickly. Trey's music touched my soul incredibly deep like so many others. But being cursed (or blessed), as a redhead growing up, his presence & his success, defied what modern society often crudely tight-casted us "ginger mutants," as. He was my first real role model that I could positively identify with... just had to wait till young adulthood for the role model... at least till I discovered him. And to realize he was kind of like the "Mozart" of our day, as John Popper, even called him. It was awesome to have Trey as a role model. For all of us touched, by the band from Vermont. Truthfully, they are all amazing artists.
But I was absolutely🪝hooked, first time I heard them. And for 30 years, they've gotten me out of some pretty tough spots emotionally, kept a candle lit in the window... given me hope, where I struggled for it. All from a distance. And I would need it. A safe place to escape the world, is truly priceless. Whatever it was, or is, it has always been a JOY to experience & grow with.
It's amazing to witness their story unfold & evolve throughout the years & decades. After all, the math is quite extraordinary, if not complex. Beautiful, really. And of course, we're all in this together. We're all a small parts, in one giant, beautiful mosaic, formed around the band; the 4 dudes we love so dearly. Despite all of our shortcoming, the entire circus, all the people, the culture, the sense of community--it is still probably one of the most amazing things currently occurring on this rotten blue ball. Again, they give me hope.
But enough about me...
My story is probably very similar to a lot of others. And you're not here to listen to me blabber on & on about myself... or wax about what it's like, being a fire-crotched mutant. Let's talk about what makes a donut "lumpy." I mean... you're here for the donuts!
- Peer into the Lump's kitchen. Nutritional values for Lumpy Donuts, are as follows:
Peer into the Lump's kitchen...
I've had some previous inquiries into weather I use AI generation in my current works. The short answer is an impassioned "no."
- I'd be more than happy to walk anyone through my creative process.
- Honestly, it's my belief that one of you stinky wooks could make much better donuts than myself, before an AI ever could. Again, I'm not Van Gogh & the bar is particularly low.
Walk with me... and I'll show you.
Artist Process
In making a donut the "Lumpy way," the first things to consider are:
- lighting / shadowing
- illumination / color density
- features / specific details
- texture options
- trims / accents
- and eventually "actual" donut holes
*A Donut without a hole, is a donut without true north. Otherwise, it's a multi-dimensional object, being presented with 1-dimensional form.
At Lump's, we specialize in donuts that have standalone character & depth. Even if a graphic is never added to them, our donuts stick-out, all by themseves. MEATY donuts with definition... some hips to them! These are my kind of donuts! Donuts that capture the lighting combinations we [as fans] get from the better lighting rigs/crews & affects. And truly, if a donut [torus] is a universe, should it not look like a universe in the subtleties? Shadowing and providing the 3D appearance of depth/form is critical. We present donuts specifically designed with form & character, at heart. It is foundational to our process.
Depth and texture add a lot of elements too. Giving different "types" of donuts, unique characteristcs & charm.
- Adding trim and accent colors, match the visuals we see from the lighting rig, regardless of the artwork in our donuts.
Texture/Illumination/ Shading
This is where I do spend a good amount of time on the donuts. Ultimately, my hope is that lumpy donuts are delicious enough--on their own, without graphics. But I do like to have fun, often portraying a bit of imagery & theme, through simple graphics. Light-hearted & nothing too particularly complex.
If a donut has too much going on, it can be confusing to look at. So I do try to keep the donut concepts fairly simple.
